CFP: Feeling Through Media:Intermedial Approaches to the Polycrisis
October 28, 2026Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University, Brno, invites scholars and researchers to the international scientific colloquium organised by Petr Bubeníček’s research team within the project funded by the Czech Science Foundation The Trap of the Everyday: Czech Literature on Screen 1970–1995 (GA2620798S).
The event will take place on the 22–23rd April 2027 at Faculty of Arts, Arne Nováka 1, Brno, Czechia
Everyday life is so familiar and self-evident that it often escapes our attention. Yet precisely this apparent inconspicuousness raises important questions: how is everydayness constructed, represented, and mediated across different media? The aim of the colloquium is to explore everydayness from an intermedial perspective, bringing together cultural-historical approaches to media and everyday life with perspectives from art history and theory. The colloquium will feature keynote lectures by Jørgen Bruhn (Linnaeus University) and Thomas Leitch (University of Delaware).
In media research, everyday life has often been explored within cultural studies, particularly through analyses of the role played by media such as radio or television in shaping cultural experience (see, e.g., Joke Hermes, “Media, meaning and everyday life”. Cultural Studies 7[3], 1993, pp. 493–506). More recent scholarship has focused on contemporary digital media, including mobile phones and social networks (see, e.g., Brita Ytre-Arne, Media Use in Digital Everyday Life. Leeds: Emerald Publishing Limited 2023). These works successfully identify the functions of specific media within everyday culture, but they generally pay less attention to how everydayness itself is represented or constructed within media products. Such analyses are more common in art history and theory, yet they rarely approach everydayness comparatively across different media.
An intermedial perspective offers a productive framework for researching everydayness, as it opens up a space of in-betweenness in which the coexistence and interaction of media and cultural forms can be observed (see, e.g., Ágnes Pethő, “Affective Intermediality: An Introduction,” in Affective Intermediality: Moving Images Between Media, Sensation and Reality, ed. Ágnes Pethő. Cham: Palgrave Macmillan 2026, pp. 1–44). Everydayness can thus be understood as a multifaceted phenomenon that takes on different forms across media, while media themselves simultaneously shape lived everyday experience through their interaction.
The colloquium seeks to foster interdisciplinary dialogue among scholars of intermediality, everyday life, media studies, cultural studies, and art history. We welcome contributions from scholars working in film and media studies, literary studies, memory studies, digital culture, cultural studies, art history, and related disciplines.
Your contributions may address, but are not limited to, the following questions:
— Everydayness as a Concept: What forms of everydayness can be identified in artistic practice, theory, and art history? Do artists, theorists, and historians treat everydayness as a uniform phenomenon, or does their work reveal multiple nuances and understandings of the concept?
— Representation and Mediation of Everydayness: How is everydayness reflected or constructed within individual media products or their configurations? Through what formal or aesthetic strategies does everyday life become visible in different media?
— Everydayness Across Media: How do artistic strategies for engaging with everydayness differ across media such as film, literature, music, theater, visual art, photography, or digital media? What similarities and differences emerge from a comparative perspective?
1/2— Media and the Everyday Experience: How do media products influence our perception and experience of everyday life, both in the present and historically? In what ways is lived everyday reality structured or transformed by media products and their modalities?
— Everydayness Through Memory and Nostalgia: What roles do intermediality and everydayness play in relation to nostalgia and memory? How do media products participate in the construction of subjective or collective memories of everyday life?
